2020 Christmasville Limited Edition - 11x12 Oil on Cedar
To hunt, the great horned owl uses secrecy and stealth with camouflaged plumage appropriate for forests and hunting at night. He also rests in "tall-thin" position to appear as slim as possible. He has large eyes with pupils that open widely in the dark and retinas containing many rod cells for excellent night vision. His eyes don't move in their sockets, instead he can swivel his head more than 180 degrees to look in any direction. He also has sensitive hearing and is covered in soft feathers, which insulate him against the cold winter, but also help him fly very quietly in pursuit of prey. His short, wide wings allow him to maneuver among the trees.
