Juvenile Red-tailed Hawk

7.5x11 Oil on Cedar - This hawk is often called a chicken hawk in the US, although it rarely preys on a standard-sized chicken. It is legally protected in Canada, Mexico and the US by the Migratoray Bird Treaty Act and adult hawks, which may be breeding or rearing chicks, may not taken legally for falconry purposees. These birds soar in flight looking for prey or they may sit for hours on a perch and may be attacked by a murder of crows, who can cause grevious harm to the hawk.
